Snow-Camp apprentices enjoy an unforgettable experience at the Delancey British National Alpine Ski Championships

Last week Snow-Camp Director, Dan Charlish and London Programme Manager, Gavin Hanmer headed to the Delancey British Championships with Snow-Camp Apprentices Hamza, Laquan, Lewis and Aimee.

The Championships, which is the biggest event on the British Alpine Ski Racing calendar, saw the best British ski racers battling it out for the Senior and Junior honours alongside their world-class international counterparts. The Snow-Camp team reached the French resort of Tignes on Tuesday and with the Championships already in full swing, it was an eye opening change of environment for our apprentices, who were determined to make the most out of the experience by volunteering across the event as part of the on snow organising team. They supported British Ski and Snowboard staff by helping to record racers’ times, assisted staff at the start gates and were on hand to aid the pro ski athletes whenever possible. In their down time our apprentices immersed themselves in the ski culture by trying as many new activities as possible. From skiing from the top of the Grande Motte to Val Claret and riding on the back of a skidoo to representing Snow-Camp at various championship events. They also participated in media interviews with Sportsbeat, Ski Club of Great Britain and BBC Breakfast’s Mike Bushell. All experiences they would not have dreamed of doing a little over a year ago.

The Snow-Camp team were also invited to a private dinner hosted by Sir and Lady Ritblat, which was attended by His Royal Highness, Prince Edward. It was a wonderful experience and we’re so grateful to the Ritblat family and everyone at Delancey for allowing us to be a part of such a wonderful evening. Our apprentices were lucky enough to meet Prince Edward, where they spoke about Snow-Camp and the impact our work has had on their lives. Our young people embraced this change in environment and were eager to take on new challenges. Over the course of the week they improved their skiing skills, achieved further work experience and gained many new lifeskills. It was really pleasing to hear how much more confident the apprentices felt by the end of the week and they were all really proud of their achievements.

Our 4 apprentices wrote a personal note of thanks to Delancey’s CEO, Jamie Ritblat, detailing their highlights of the week. Responding to Snow-Camp apprentice, Hamza, Jamie said:

“Thank you for your lovely note and I can feel the enthusiasm you have had for this week, through your words. That gives me great pleasure because it not only justifies my support for British skiing, but also the very special relationship we have with Snow-Camp.”

We would just like to say a big thank to Delancey and to British Ski and Snowboard for involving us in the Championships, it was an outstanding event to be part of. Big well done and many congratulations to all the Championship winners and to everyone who took part, including Snow-Camp Ambassadors Cara Brown, Jack Gower and Nick Moynihan. Roll on 2018!
