On the 15th September 2013 the first ever Virgin Kitesurfing Armada set a new World Record for the ‘Largest Parade of Kitesurfers’ ever, with 318 kitesurfers completing the mile course at Hayling Island. After setting the record, kitesurfers set off on an epic downwinder from Hayling Island to Lancing 46 miles away, to raise as much money for Snow-Camp, the RNLI and Virgin Unite as possible! To date over £70,000 has been raised for charity through this event.
Virgin put together the video below of the day:
You can see photos and read more about the event at Sir Richard’s blog here.
Planning for the Armada started on the 12th April 2013 when Snow-Camp’s Dan Charlish and Chris Bull of CBK Kitesurfing tested the route. See map and stats below:
With Lewis Crathern backing the event, interest began to grow fast. We tested the route with a bigger group of kitesurfers and a boat, and as word spread, hundreds of kitesurfers started signing up and raising money to be part of kitesurfing history! It was an amazing day to be part of, as the videos above and elsewhere capture. A huge thank you to everyone involved – the sponsors, the volunteers, the support teams, the councils and most of all the kitesurfers. Registrations for next year will be open from 1st January 2014.
