Over 4 days at The Mendip Snowsports Centre, the Snow-Camp team ran 2 beginner First Tracks Programmes, giving inner-city young people from across Bristol and the surrounding areas the chance to experience skiing and snowboarding for the first time, as well as the opportunity to reflect on the key life-skills learnt on the slope which they can take back with them in their daily lives.
The charity were joined by a number of key supporters of the Bristol expansion including Olympic Bronze Medalist and Snow-Camp Patron Jenny Jones, staff from Ski Safari – the specialist tour operator and primary sponsors for the Bristol expansion – as well as other guests and industry media who turned out to celebrate the launch, to see the young people’s learning in action and even get involved on the slope.
Jenny Jones said: “I really wanted to be a part of it and see how the young people develop over here. It’s such a great charity to be involved with. I came down last year for the pilot programme and it’s really nice to see how things have developed, obviously with the young people physically learning new skills but also mentally with their social skills and the life-skills reflection that Snow-Camp set up for them. I had a great time seeing the young people develop, and seeing them learn so quickly. The main thing was that they all looked like they were enjoying it, which was just awesome to see.”
Vicky Bamford – Marketing Coordinator at Ski Safari said: Mendip is an amazing venue and we’re delighted to be involved with such an inspiring project. It was fantastic to meet the guys taking their first steps on this life-changing journey and to witness the passion in those already on their path. This is truly skiing and snowboarding as it should be – the best life experience open to everyone – and we couldn’t be more proud of everything Snow camp are doing.”
Dan Keeley – Snowsports Community Manager at Snow-Camp said: “The Bristol launch has come round quickly since we first gained Ski Safari’s support just over 9 months ago. To now be live in Bristol and working closely with the Mendip Snowsport Centre team to support young people across the city is just hugely exciting for us, and we’re so grateful for the backing & belief in our work from our partners to help make this happen.”
It is Snow-Camp’s vision to continue developing the programmes with the ultimate goal of having a full 12-month journey for young people in Bristol as per the London programmes, and having young people from across London, Scotland (where we’ve been opting for over 3 years now) and Bristol join us in the mountains on our Excel programmes training to become snowsports instructors themselves.
