New Year Reflection

2020 has been a year unlike any other. But, despite the challenges 2020 brought, we have seen another side of Snow-Camp – one of determination and resilience. snowsports charity with no access to the indoor snow centres or the mountains, we could’ve easily put our work with young people on hold. But that isn’t the Snow-Camp way! We hope you enjoy reading our New Year Reflection below.

Since March we have worked tirelessly, quickly springing into action and rising to the challenge of adapting our work as much as possible while providing new services to young people, to continue to be a lifeline for many.

Some highlights include:

For Snow-Camp young people we moved as much of our work online as we could: mental wellbeing workshops, life-skills sessions, 1-1 counselling sessions, qualification coursework and Youth Forum Meetings now all take place virtually.

We launched a brand-new Youth Hub on our website and ran our first webinar series Be InspiredSome of the biggest names in the UK snowsports industry gave inspiring talks to our young people (they are hosted on our Youth Hub if you’d like to watch them!).

Be Inspired Reflection

We partnered with LEAP and JHD Counselling Services Ltd to provide a range of new mental health and counselling training courses for our apprentices and volunteers, including a Confronting Conflict and Becoming Youth Facilitators course and Level 1 Introduction to Counselling Skills course. Pictured below are some of our young people with their Level 1 certificates!

Certificates New Year Reflection

We continued to engage youth clubs and their young people through our new ‘Headstart’ virtual sessions. Here young people found out more about Snow-Camp while taking part in a mental health workshop delivered by our in-house counsellor Kevin Hempstead. The aim of Headstart is to address some of the emotions young people may be feeling and to show them that there are positive opportunities and a path to employment available with Snow-Camp in the foreseeable future. We hope to run more of these sessions over the next few months in the run up to our snowsports programmes starting again in spring/summer (fingers crossed). If you would like to find out more about Headstart please contact our Programme Director, Gavin Hanmer – gavin@snow-camp.org.uk

Headstart

In November we knew that we had to do more to support young people outside of the Snow-Camp community. So we launched Stop.Breathe.Think, a mental health campaign offering free virtual mental health support to young people across the UK.

Young people can access 1-1 counselling sessions via stopbreathethink.co.uk. Youth workers, social workers, teachers and parents are also able to refer young people for support through the same site. We’ve formed an innovative partnership with JHD and are working with them to deliver the sessions. With 30+ counsellors on their books, we can ensure that young people get the right targeted support they need.

As part of the campaign, we launched a text support service in partnership with Shout. Here young people can text BREATHE to 85258, to text with a trained volunteer first before accessing the counselling support.

The Stop.Breathe.Think website also encourages young people to sign up for a series of mindfulness tutorials, which provide mindfulness techniques to help young people manage their emotions.

We’re delighted that the campaign is supported by leading youth music platform LinkUpTV and drill music artist Nito NB, who have helped to promote the campaign to their audiences.

Stop.Breathe.Think

We know that there is still much work to be done in 2021, especially amidst the continued uncertainty. But what we do know is that we have grown into something far more than a snowsports charity, mental health is now, and will continue to be, at the forefront of our work, with Stop.Breathe.Think and Uplift leading our efforts. But that doesn’t mean that we aren’t really looking forward to getting back to the indoor snow centres!

Finally, whave been moved and humbled by the support we received from our supporters over the last few months, thank you. None of this would have been possible without you. From donating and spreading the word about our work to companies offering new and innovative ways to partner with us, we are so grateful. Thank you. If you would like to support us, please do get in touch.

For now, we will sign off our reflection email with a link to our new journey film. This is the film that we show to young people when they first join Snow-Camp, to highlight the opportunities that are available through us. We hope it will bring a little bit of joy to your day (warning, it will make you miss the mountains!). Watch it below!

Warm wishes,

Team Snow-Camp.
